A NADER VOTER REPENTS AT LONG LAST

'It's Tweedledee and Tweedledum,' he said then. Now he says he's repentant.

A Nader Voter Sings the Bush Blues
By Jason Salzman

After George W. Bush was elected president, my Gore-loving neighbor gave me a green "Unrepentant Nader Voter" bumper sticker. After the Florida fiasco, she thought I would be ashamed to stick it on my car. Wrong. I immediately slapped it on my Honda. It was beautiful.

In March, shortly after bombs began dropping on Baghdad, I took a razor blade from my garage and excised the letters "un" from "unrepentant," leaving "repentant Nader Voter" on my bumper.

It was a liberating act of self-correction that all Nader voters should think about.

It took more than two years before I felt sufficiently repentant about my Nader vote to admit my mistake. I hadn't been a passive Nader voter. To me, there was Tweedledee, Tweedledum and Ralph Nader.

I picked every fight I could with Democrats or Republicans. Gore supporters were incredulous that I would vote for Nader in such a close election, but I didn't care. I wanted Nader to get 5% of the vote so he'd be entitled to federal campaign money in 2004. These funds would have given him a real chance to inject his
views in the "debate."

The benefits of this outcome seemed to far exceed the downside of having Bush, rather than Gore, as the next president. Many of my closest friends, including my wife, thought otherwise, and we spent hours dissecting what a Bush presidency would mean for government, including---oh my God!---the Supreme Court.

I did not repent even after the big Bush tax cut sailed through Congress in 2001.

But after 9/11, I had my first repentant thoughts about voting for Nader, not so much because of individual Bush initiatives---like the horrific Patriot Act---but because his administration was brazenly creating a climate of fear just to get more Republicans elected. It worked, and the Republicans gained control of Congress.

More guilt and repentance set in after Bush invaded Iraq---as the world watched in shock. I could not make myself believe that Democrats would have started it, especially without United Nations
support. This was Bush's war.

What really pushed me toward total repentance was the realization that Bush was just getting started.

Bush talks about his tax cuts as if more are on the way, favoring the very wealthy at the expense of the poor and disabling the federal government from the inside out.

I would not be surprised if our country went to war again with Bush at the helm. The U.N., which is our greatest hope for world peace and global prosperity, stands no chance of recovery as long as Bush is in
power.

As for civil liberties, the Patriot Act II has apparently already been drafted. Everywhere you turn, there's more disaster waiting to happen, including, yes, the Supreme Court.

Tweedledee is still Tweedledee. But Tweedledum has turned into global tyrant. We've given this tyrant more power than any other person on Earth, and he's using it.

And so, yes, I corrected my "Unrepentant Nader Voter" bumper sticker. I decided to support the Tweedledee most likely to defeat Bush in the next election. At some other time, I probably will support a third-party candidate like Nader when the choice again is between Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

Dear Al, Hope I got the correct name? My inquiry is about the iconoclastic man of many journey's through this world & beyond Ted Joans. I never had a chance to meet him & dig his mantra of thoughts. The only encounter I had with Ted was a series of letters back & forth while he was living in Paris...I tried my best to get the University of Virginia & North Carolina Central University to bring him over for lectures & poetry reading, but it was not to be, they were not interested at that time during the eighties. You know it seems he left this world as fast as he came into it. Thank the creator for the 74 or 75 years he was here. What I want to ask you is will his autobiography be forthcoming later on " since I never got a chance to see him reciting his prose/poetry is there any private tapes or videotapes of him out there? what was he doing in Vancouver, B.C. " Oh! by the way years ago I talked with someone at Howard University, Washington , D.C and they had a film of him reading his poetry & you could only view it by coming directly to the campus to see it. I hope someone will do a documentary about him & his association with Jazz legends such as Archie Shepp & his spiritual mentor Charlie "BIRD" Parker...Jazz was in Ted's BloodLine. I wrote him once telling of the recording I had of him a CD called Jazz Is My Religion", he wrote back wanted to know where I got it from...it may have been a BootLeg or something? dont have it anymore lent it to a lady friend that split & went to Louisana, never heard from her again. Take Care....TED JOANS LIVES", Edwin

Dear Mr. Aronowitz,

While searching for information about Alene Lee, I've come across your interesting stories about Village bohemians. I'm interested in knowing more about the African Americans who were part of the Beat generation, especially the women. I wonder if you've written more extensively about Alene Lee, or if you'd be willing to share your memories of her?Although she's mentioned in relation to Kerouac in some critical and historical
texts, there's very little information about her other than Kerouac's version of her in TheSubterraneans. I'm curious to know about her life before and after Kerouac, as well as her own version of their encounter.

I teach creative writing, American poetry, and African American literature at UCLA. I would really appreciate any information you can share with me.

Thank you,
Harryette Mullen

Al?
This is one of my favorite columns of yours EVER .When you were there though, did they serve that thick, bright blue liquor?

When Dave Rave went to St. Petersberg in 92 to shoot our Conspiracy video, his Politburo "guide" was forever serving him this particular, and extremely potent, aqua-colored drink.

Would be curious as to its origin, and if you ever had to come to grips with it yourself during your "Bittle"
visit ;-)

Hope all is well with you; looking forward to Ninety-Three,

ABOUT THE MYDDLE CLASS TAPE

From: Steve Kilpatrick expeditiousproductions@yahoo.com
To: info@blacklistedjournalist.com

Hi; I just discovered your website and had a very wonderful weekend reading most of your columns. I especially dig the music related stuff; speaking of which, does your offer still hold to dub that Myddle Class cassette for a donation of 35$ " If so, expect a USPS MO shortly. By the way, I have a self-produced low-budget cd of my own sheeet. After decades of bar gigs , I did it basically for my 40-50 fans and my hypothetical grandkids. I'd be curious for any feedback you might have to offer since you've been around tuneage for some time. It's picked up some nice reviews, but confuses a lot of folks . Anyway, if it's cool , I'll send that along with the Money order. Could you give me the address again just to double check?

Thanks

ABOUT GEORGE W. BUSH

Any chance that you might be able to get accurate figures of the maimed, amputated, blinded, etc soldiers in military hospitals? I understand that the white house refuses to give out the numbers. Perhaps if things like this were revealed as well as the lie about Bush supposedly finding God and stopping drinking in 1986 (while on the Smoking Gun site he is on a 1992 wedding video dead drunk) we might stop hearing about his supposed character and the perception is that instead he is a character. Like the lies his father told about the supposed bayoneting of pregnant women or the shutting off of electricity to incubators by Iraqi soldiers after invading Iraq this bush lies and if we could get a way to question his character the lies and deaths might just stop.
