'BY VALOR AND ARMS'

(for Eddie & Shirley Carthan)

deep down, colored Mississippi

lynch us no more
confederate soldier
let my people go
dont you water your cotton fields with our babies
dont you blacken your magnolia trees with our charred bones

Let your mockingbirds sing odes of freedom
throw your slave history in the tallahatchie river
chop down your hanging trees
turn your hate
strangle your racist
unchain your loyal black hands
promise your living
you will kill no more
outlaw your klan
know enemies wear hoods of bigotry

let freedom drop from your pecan trees
help give birth to a democratic south
do what you must
ol'man river filled with black blood
my people will die no more
to fertilize your greed
let those who love money more than life
die where they stand

let all who want justice step forth
against thieves and murderers
long river, Mississippi
dont you weep for me
we will not stop
we want freedom's harvest
ol'Miss,
You gon have to
let my people go  ##
