[From Colombia's celebrated poet, Raúl Henao of Medellin, here's another poem in Spanish, accompanied by its English translation, both from Raúl's La vida a la carta or Life a la carte.]

SOLEDAD

Tras los muros
escucho el bullicioso juego
de los niños, la música
en jirones de u na pianola,
o el violin de un grillo
escondido en la alta hierba
del patio trasero
de la casa.

Después se hace un largo
silencio, que por instantes
parece no acabar
ni tener fin.

Un sllcncio como Lin espejo
Donde contemplo indefinidamente
mi propio rostro
inescrutable.  ##

SOLITUDE

Behind the walls
I hear the children's riotous
game, the tattered music
of a pianola,
or a cricket's violin
hidden in the high
grass of the patio
in back of the house.

Then a long silence
ripens, at times seeming
neither to cease
nor have an end.

A silence like a mirror
in which I contemplate
my own inscrutable face
indefinitely.  ##
