MERILENE: I just don't have the energy. Besides, I'm still about $2,000 in the hole on the last party. . .

So, I really don't have the energy. But it's a good idea. Someone has to do it better than I had the resources to. A non profit organization must be incorporated to handle the checks. Call it THE BANDSHELL POETS. Organize a committee and I'll help with my mailing lists. But somebody has to take over. Somebody or a partnership of two somebodies. I'll help as much as I can. But somebody else has got to take the lead. We probably could get a permit for a replay, although it seems late to start for next June. Best, Al.

Had the above exchange with Merilene. Think another Bandshell event is a great idea. I can help but don't have the energy to do it all again. Need others to run it. There were enough poets there to form a committee to organize another event. In the Bandshell. How about it? --Al ##

Poetry doesn't need any more half baked dimwits to lead its majestic journey into the next millennium. We need strong minds with strong ideas. And remember, a true anarchist never sleeps until 1:00 pm and then wastes the rest of the day trying to shake off a heroin hangover. Seize the day poets!!! ##

Hello Al,

Greetings from Kentucky! I haven't gotten a chance to e-mail you after your first message. I mainly want to thank you for your hard work and say all respect and honor for your long years, commitment to music and poetry. The stories you have to share (esp. I think of Billy Holiday meeting the Beats) are incredible. Secondly, I wish I knew you the asshole is and yeah, my thoughts exactly: where does this guy get off on ripping into somebody who has clearly offered so much of his time and talent without owning up to who HE is. I sent this guy an e-mail chastising him for his lack of class, wish I'd forwarded to everybody else too.

Don't know if I can get involved in organizing a second event, but you have all my admiration. I understand tho it can be a heavy load to bear.

What's up dude? I am writing a school paper and decided to do it on influential writers of the Beat Generation. I naturally thought of those such as Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. I originally thought of doing it on Timothy Leary. Upon reading about this guy I came across the names of other fascinating people such as the above stated and others including Neal Cassady.

This led to an interest in their writings and I found them to be very interesting people with cool, for lack of better words, lives. Upon researching them I came across your web page and found it fascinating. I really just wanted to thank you for helping me out in a round about way and would be interested if you had any other information that you might have or know of. Thanks.

THREE PARADIGMS

Subject: Jazz
From: "Charley Peterson" <cpeters1@rochester.rr.com>
To: info@blacklistedjournalist.com

Hi Al,

Many months ago I mentioned my son in law's band, Paradigm Shift, and referred you to a few web pages I put together that told about the band. My daughter has since got a computer and created what I think are far superior pages including one page with several audio clips for downloading. Now it is possible to get some idea of their musical style. Thought you might like to check it out. It's at http://home.earthlink.net/~jaez/paradigm/shift/jazz.html

I really liked your article about Jimi Hendrix. I and black musician friend of mine were really into Jimi at the time of his death. I'm amazed at how much I dwelled in the sound of first Jazz in the late fifties then Rock from the mid sixties to late 70's and Punk music during the late 70's early 80's. Loud music, partying, all hours of the day and night. Now I listen to local jazz station while riding around in car. Home scene much quieter. Sort of full circle, much more mellow once again. Listened to Miles Davis several times at the Southerland Hotel on Cottage Grove Avenue in Chicago in '59. Real cool hipster cats.

Do you think you might do something on the web with that story you wrote about your visit with Wallace Berman? I don't think there is anyone who influenced my thinking and development more than Wallace. This is even though I probably spent less than ten days in his presence over the twenty years I knew him. Even to this day my mental concept of what Wallace is to me appears in my consciousness leading me along. He became what I think Jung refers to as an archtyphical figure.

Hope your doing well. And may I wish you happiness, health, and success in this the Royal Tibetan New Year 2121, the year of the Earth-Rabbit.

Subject: One of our missiles is missing...

Al

One of our missiles is missing....

Today we learn that despite the USA & the UK's assurances of the use of 'smart weapons' & the targeting of military installations only, one of the USA's missiles 'went astray' yesterday, hitting a civilian area of Basra in Iraq. Eleven people are dead so far & many more are injured.

Iraqi civilians are an oppressed people. The economic sanctions & military manoeuvres effect them not the government---ranking members of Saddam's regime are not going hungry or find themselves under immediate threat of bombing.

I could live with this, & I believe many others could too, if the USA & the UK were also intimidating other evil dictators & regimes, trying to promote change for oppressed people. But, on the contrary, we are actively supporting them.

Every poor country currently involved in aggression against its people or its neighbours has its arms supplied by richer states, usually the USA or UK who export more arms than any other country. Despite the English Labour Party's promise of an 'ethical' foreign policy we are still supplying arms to Indonesia who have occupied East Timor since 1975 & have killed over 100 000 people in cold blood. Our own Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook, highlighted British support of this evil regime as a young Labour MP in the late 70's & early 80's in the Spectator. Yet today he & our Prime Minister Blair give their tacit agreement to the continued export of arms to this regime despite promising to do the opposite only 2 years ago. Indeed the supply of arms to Indonesia would have provided the perfect test case for Robin Cook to show the government were as good as their word. Astonishingly it has been easier since the new Labour government in spring '97 to ratify arms contracts at the Foreign office.

The point is that it is abundantly clear that the major economic & military powers are picking & choosing their enemies 'off the shelf'. Indonesia invaded East Timor in 1975 with the agreement of the USA & UK who knew that it would become 'an investor's paradise.' Saddam Hussein was an ally of the West throughout the Iran/Iraq conflict & struck a deal with Thatcher in the 80's for arms, which he reneged on (meaning that many allied troops were actually killed or injured by their own countrymen's weapons, which hadn't even been paid for).

What a squalid state of affairs---it makes me ashamed of my country. When the English voted in Tony Blair's party in 1997 we really expected things would change, particularly with foreign policy. How naive we were. If anything the situation is worsening. We need to ask WHY WHY WHY? Because there sure as hell is a reason---the most powerful governments in the world do not do anything without a bloody good reason (bloody being the operative word in this case), & I'm pretty sure they don't care too much about the Iraqi people. People still go homeless & hungry in our own countries & they are ignored---why should Clinton & Blair care about Iraqi's "

Something is wrong and has been for many, many years.

A MURRAY THE K STORY

From: David Malbuff <David.Malbuff@ucop.edu>
Subject: Murray the K

Just finished your column on Murray the K [COLUMN 18]. Very good stuff. I was one of those who listened to his show every day on WHFS in the early '70s. He was a legend then, even to us teenagers. And you are right, he had great respect for the music he played.

You might like to know that one day on 'HFS, Murray got a call from one Matt Koehl, a member of the National Socialist White People's Party (formerly the American Nazi Party). Murray had been playing Tom Rush's version of the old folk tune "Cocaine Blues" (was Tom Rush the folk artist who Murray helped make big in DC? Wouldn't surprise me.), and the Nazi spokesman took great exception to it, accusing Murray of glorifying drugs.

Murray put the guy right on the air, live, and argued with him over the phone from the studio, winging it all the way. The Nazi was calling him "Murray the Kike" and insulting the hell out of him, and Murray kept his cool and fired right back at the lout.

It was brilliant.

I hadn't thought of that incident for a long time. When I think of Murray the K, I think of how he took on that guy, in public, on the air, when he could've just hung up the phone---even though he knew he'd be opening himself up to insults and lies. What a guy.

Subject: Good Column

Just read your entire Blacklisted Columnist work on Murray Kaufman. Thoroughly enjoyed every word. Wondering who you are and where I'll find the next thing you do online. What was your byline in the Post? In 1956 I worked for Mercury Records on 5th Ave. Murray would drop in there almost on a daily basis. I don't even know who he came to see. I was most taken by his charm and appearance even though he was an "older" man in his early thirties. All the girls were wild about him and was he ever a flirt. I think he hit on everyone there at one time or another. I went out for drinks with him, more for his velvet collared coat I think. He scared the hell out of me and when I said I wanted to go home he was nice enough to take me in a cab to Penn Station even though he was bored stiff. How I have laughed over that memory on the rare occasions I think of it. Did you know anyone at Mercury in the mid 50's? A gal named Harriet Wasserstein was there, very much involved in promoting Eddie Fisher at the time on her own. She was a friend of Murrays. I came across a picture of her in a book about Bobby Darin. The sound engineer was Doug Hawkins and Murray would spend time in the sound studio with him. Hugo and Luigi were there & their gal Arpena. Beside being a wonderfully insightful take on Murray and yourself, your column thrust me into a nostalgic retro the likes of which I haven't experienced. I wasn't aware that Murray interacted with William F. Buckley and I find that a hoot. I remember Bill in wrinkled suits drinking out of beer bottles in the '50s at political rallies. Murray & Bill? Worlds apart, but maybe not. Now I want to know about your NYPost column back then. In all these years, with all the changes in the paper, I still read the Post from South Jersey. I only ask to be entertained.

Thanks for an enjoyable read.

Recently, Dan Quayle announced his intention to run for President of the United States in 2000. Since many voters may not have been watching the news when these were said the first time, we provide you with this roundup of famous Quayle quotes. Please spread these to as many people was you can, so that we might stop this lunacy before it gets out of hand.

"If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure."

"Republicans understand the importance of bondage between a mother and child."

"Welcome to President Bush, Mrs. Bush, and my fellow astronauts."

"Mars is essentially in the same orbit.... Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, which is very important. We have seen pictures where there are canals, we believe, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. If oxygen, that means we can breathe."

"What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is."

"I was recently on a tour of Latin America, and the only regret I have was that I didn't study Latin harder in school so I could converse with those people."

"The Holocaust was an obscene period in our nation's history. I mean in this century's history. But we all lived in this century. I didn't live in this century."

"I believe we are on an irreversible trend toward more freedom and democracy---but that could change."

"One word sums up probably the responsibility of any vice president, and that one word is 'to be prepared.'"

"May our nation continue to be the beakon of hope to the world."

"Verbosity leads to unclear, inarticulate things."

"I have made good judgements in the Past. I have made good judgements in the Future."

"The future will be better tomorrow."

"We're going to have the best-educated American people in the world."

"People that are really very weird can get into sensitive positions and have a tremendous impact on history."

"I stand by all the misstatements that I've made."

"We have a firm commitment to NATO, we are a 'part' of NATO. We have a firm commitment to Europe. We are a "part" of Europe."

"Public speaking is very easy."

"I am not part of the problem. I am a Republican."

"I love California, I practically grew up in Phoenix."

"A low voter turnout is an indication of fewer people going to the polls."

"When I have been asked during these last weeks who caused the riots and the killing in L.A., my answer has been direct and simple: Who is to blame for the riots? The rioters are to blame. Who is to blame for the killings? The killers are to blame."

"Illegitimacy is something we should talk about in terms of not having it."

"We are ready for any unforeseen event that may or may not occur."

"For NASA, space is still a high priority."

"Quite frankly, teachers are the only profession that teach our children."

"The American people would not want to know of any misquotes that Dan Quayle may or may not make."

"We're all capable of mistakes, but I do not care to enlighten you on the mistakes we may or may not have made."

"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it."

"[It's] time for the human race to enter the solar system." ##
